La Salle University will be sponsoring its 6th annual Explore Your Health! Community Health Fair on Saturday, October 21st from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Shoppes at La Salle (between Church and Wister on Chew Avenue). This established neighborhood happening is expected to bring together over 400 members of the University community and local residents of our Germantown, Logan, Olney, and Wister neighborhood (GLOW) for a day of exploring resources that make for healthy bodies and of strengthening the bonds of civic engagement that make for a healthy neighborhood. The high-energy event is an initiative of the University’s Community Building Team (CBT)—a group of students, faculty, staff and neighbors who, according to their mission statement, “operate with mutual respect, compassion, and inclusivity” and work to live those values in our neighborhood through purposeful partnerships.
This year the CBT anticipates over 50 vendors representing local health care providers and wellness specialists in the areas of elder care, domestic violence, nutrition, autism, childhood injury prevention, and cancer treatment. Past participating vendors include PECO, the Clean Air Council, AARP Experience Corps, and a variety of learning and literacy centers. In addition, a variety of academic programs from across the University are expected to participate. Some, like the Neighborhood Nursing Program, the Nutrition Program, and the Ladder Program for families wrestling with autism will offer screenings and consultations. Others will contribute to the fair’s block party vibe. La Salle athletes do the face painting for children, operate the giant Bounce House, and participate in zumba demonstrations and dance routines on the main stage throughout the day. A Zumba instructor will get everybody up and moving, and local government officials have been invited to rally the crowd with neighborhood pride.
