Meeting Minutes – February 20, 2004

In addition to general business, announcements, and information-sharing, we “de-briefed” in regard to Friday’s fire situation and our responses to it and participated in preparations for our Alcohol and Other Drug Program’s fourth biennial administration next week of the CORE Alcohol Survey. Mr. Wendell represented us at Stetson University’s Legal Issues in Higher Education Conference and he will be sharing much of the information he learned at the next monthly session to be conducted for our division by our Staff Development Team. We met with the Provost and the President and received their approval for our proposal, upon recommendations from both the Community Development Advisory Board and the Health Advisory Committee, and with the support of the Student Affairs Committee, to eliminate smoking from our student residences, beginning with the residence halls as of fall, 2004, and then the apartments and townhouses as of fall, 2005 and fall, 2006, respectively. Replies were unanimously in support of elimination, and several voiced support for full elimination as of fall, 2004. We learned, further, that the President’s Team has acted affirmatively on the Health Advisory Committee’s recommendation that smoking be fully eliminated from all other University buildings. A formal announcement will be forthcoming. We successfully implemented the plan we had put into place, in association with Security and Safety, to support our Masque’s second weekend of performances of The Laramie Project and to respond to expressions of contrasting points of view. Dr. C. was to be away for the weekend and the beginning of the coming week with our Students’ Government Association’s delegation to the Conference on Student Government Associations (COSGA) at Texas A&M University.
