Meeting Minutes – March 11, 2004

Updates were provided in regard to the outreaches to students from and those currently studying in Spain, in the aftermath of today’s terrorist bombing in Madrid; the efforts of several University offices and student organizations to assist students impacted upon by 20th Street closure protests and residential/dining facilities construction; and SGA’s recent participation in the national Conference on Student Government Associations (COSGA) at Texas A&M University, including their presentations at the conference with Dr. Cicala. It was noted that Prof. Klein will represent our committee in the upcoming meeting with national representatives of Chi Upsilon Sigma, a chapter of which seeks IFSC membership at La Salle. Thanks were proffered to all who contributed, in committee and other roles, to the recent discussions and decisions bringing an end to smoking in campus buildings, and we engaged in a brief review of SGA’s Diversity Forum, in which many of us participated in lieu of our February meeting. We discussed the materials submitted by Dr. Chapman regarding the availability in our Campus Store of alcohol-related gift items and pharmaceutical products (caffeine pills, etc.) he considers questionable, from his perspective as Coordinator of our Alcohol and Other Drug Program. Consensus indicated that further discussion of the perceptions of and/or impacts on students of the former might best be conducted in an upcoming SGA Student Awareness Forum and that we will seek the expertise of the Health Services unit and the Health Advisory Committee regarding the latter prior to further discussion by our committee and/or with our associates at the Campus Store.
