  • Explore U Feedback
    • Essays from students demonstrate that the ‘Explore U’ pilot is stimulating self reflection about majors and possible future career and educational paths.
    • Majority of reactions from students (as seen in their essays) have been positive.
    • Anecdotally, it was reported that an administrator not connected to the Explore U team was at a local High School recruiting students. A potential student shared that he was interested in La Salle because the latter had heard La Salle had a program that would be helpful to him in figuring out his choice of major.
    • Lane, Lou and Phenix will be presenting a workshop at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) drive in conference on Nov. 9 related to the development of La Salle’s Explore U model – “Weaving a Web of Collaboration: Building a Career Exploration Model from the Ground Floor Up!”
  • Career Expo and Explore U
    • Career Expo will have four ‘Explore U” Stations reflecting stages of Explore U.
    • Alumni mentors have volunteered to staff each of these stations.
    • Currently 12 alumni have signed up to help out with the Career Expo.
  • Pilot Study Evaluation
    • We decided that both the Explore U pilot study students and the advisors should participate in an evaluation.
    • Potential areas to assess in the evaluation include the followings
      • Did Explore U FYO experience (i.e. the SDS) impact choice of major?
      • Did Advisor discuss Explore U results with the student?
      • Did students find the experience to be worthwhile?
      • Are students more aware of campus resources related to career choices and decisions about their future?
    • Other sources of evaluation include the following:
      • Retention data for past years on AEP students and undecided A & S students.
      • Number of students who declared majors (among undecided A & S students) by end of freshmen year this year compared to previous years.
    • Goal would be to have evaluation ready to be administered by the week before Thanksgiving.
  • Issues needing to be resolved for expanding Stage 1 to include all Freshmen for next year
    • Should all Freshmen be required to take the SDS?
    • Model currently depends on cooperation/ participation from Freshmen Advisors. Not all current advisors assigned to the pilot program are invested in the goals of Explore U.
  • Stage 2 – Explore your Possibilities – Sophomore Year
    • Genevieve will take the tasks we identified at the Sept. 20th meeting and make a checklist similar to the checklist we have been working off of for Stage 1.
    • Next meeting we will talk more about implementation of this stage.
  • Stage 3 – Explore Through Performance – Junior Year
    • We brainstormed the tasks that should be accomplished during this year.
      • Coops and internships
      • Major related student organizations
      • Research
      • Study abroad or travel study experiences
      • Begin researching grad schools
      • Talking to alumni in potential career paths that the student is considering
      • Resume construction (if not already started) and revisions
      • Eportfolio ( if available)
      • Developing a mentor relationship with an alumni
  • Next Meeting is Nov. 8th

Respectfully submitted by Lane B. Neubauer Ph.D.
