Meeting Minutes

Present: Co Chairs: Lane B. Neubauer, Lou Lamorte; Members: Teri Ceraso, Penny Grob, Jim Gulick, Margaret Lowenthal, Jim Rook, Liz Scofield
Absent: Meryl Gurmankin, Peg McCoey, Marc Moreau,

  • Feedback was solicited to gauge the usefulness and structure of the committee since the Fall was the first semester that this committee has met.
    • It was decided that 3 meetings per semester was sufficient (beginning, middle and end of the semester); extend the time for the meetings to 1 ½ hours.
    • CSAC members expressed that the meetings increased awareness of the Career Services Center’s initiatives. As a result, they were able to communicate these to the constituencies they represented.
    • It was noted that it was useful to hear what each School engages in to prepare students for future careers and how the Career Services Center can and does support these efforts.
    • The Committee facilitated networking ideas between Alumni Relations and the Career Services Center.
    • The CSAC should function as a resource to advise the Career Services Center as to needs within each School. The usefulness of the committee’s advisory capacity has not yet been fully realized. This will continue to be a focus for future meetings.
  • Explore U.
    • The evaluation of the pilot study is currently being analyzed through Institutional Research (this evaluation was embedded in the Freshmen Advising evaluation that was administered through the FYO classes).
    • A letter will be sent to Freshmen Advisors involved in Explore U to thank them for their participation and to remind them to continue to engage students in discussion of their choice of majors and to make referrals if the student is undecided or not confident in their choice.
    • The Explore U work group continues to meet bi-monthly and has completed all four stages of the model. They are currently looking at methods for implementation (how to engage students in completing the steps at each stage of the model).
    • Results from the 2007 EASE survey (Evaluating Academic Success Effectively), noted that ‘Students without a specific career goal report difficulty in a greater number of courses than those who have a specific career goal in mind”. Furthermore, it was noted that “students who were satisfied in their major and felt like they belong at La Salle were more likely to indicate that they intended to return to Spring 2008 semester”. These results directly related to the goals of the Explore U model which center on helping students focus on their choice of majors and intentionally connect their Lasallian education with their future career decisions.
  • Majors and Minors Fair – February 21, 2008 12- 2 Ballroom
    • Letters have been sent to all Department Chairs.
    • Goal is to have all academic departments represented. Target audiences are undecided Freshmen and Sophomores as well as students who are thinking of changing majors and/or adding minors.
    • RSVP’s have been slow to be returned; Career Services will be following up with phone calls to the departments who have not responded.
  • Discussion ensued about how to coordinate career related activities that are being planned that might be relevant to more than one School.
    • Possible suggestion included the following
      • A “Career Events” calendar posted on the portal.
      • Targeted portal announcements for relevant populations for an event
      • Set up a ‘portal group’ for the committee to share info about career events within the populations CSAC members represent
  • Lou Lamorte shared information about upcoming events in which the Career Services Center is involved:
    • Business Network Night – February 6, 2008
