Meeting Minutes

Present: Dr. Lane Neubauer (chair for this meeting), Dr. Ana Maria Catanzaro, Pete Engeland, Mindy Massaro, Dr. Myungho (Simon) Moon, Nathan Slife, Pat Terranova, Celeste Wade, Dr. Patricia Wilson, Ryan Yarcia.

Guests: Crystal Faries, Kate Ward-Gaus, Mike Nielsen

Absent: Dr. Joseph Cicala, Dan Bucher, Matt Doyle.

  • Celeste Wade led a moment of prayer and reflection.
  • Kate Ward-Gaus summarized Healthy Relationship week (February 10 – 16).
    • A coalition of student organizations and residence hall staffs sponsored a variety of events.
    • General consensus was that the week was very successful even though attendance varied per event.
    • The week consisted of a blend of educational, social, and fun activities that addressed developing and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Crystal Faries updated the committee on plans for Take Back the Night (April 10th).
    • The Point group will be sponsoring events throughout the week proceeding TBTN addressing the prevention of Sexual Misconduct. Examples include the following:
      • AASL – Movie Night
      • SGA – Self Defense Workshop
      • Focus –Chapel program following the TBTN candlelight vigil
    • The TBTN theme this year is “United Voices Break the Silence”
      • A keynote speaker is still being identified.
      • SAVE is interested in finding funding to purchase whistles for distribution. (Note: As a result of the February 27 Point meeting, funding will be provided by SGA.)
  • We continued the discussion about Sexual Misconduct “user friendly” materials.
    • Ana Marie Cantanzaro, Mindy Massaro and Celeste Wade distributed hard copy samples of website layout and brochure design ideas that would present info in an accessible manner for someone that might be in crisis ( i.e. a victim of sexual misconduct).
    • Mike Nielsen displayed the current website design and the committee commented on ways to improve its usability.
      • Website needs to be simplified.
      • Significant information needs to be on the front page of the website that ‘victims’ can see immediately.
        • On-campus contacts
          • During ‘business’ hours: Student Counseling Center & Student Health Center
          • After hours: RC on call
          • Security: anytime
        • Off campus contact: Women Organized Against Rape
      • Comforting pictures (not identifiable photos as these might communicate a lack of confidentiality) should be placed on the site to soften the text.
    • The committee suggested that a ‘logo’ be designed that would brand the Sexual Misconduct materials – elements of the logo should communicate both comfort as well as empowerment. Mike Nielsen will work with his design students to work on this.
    • It was suggested that we possibly consider a 24 hour designated phone number for sexual assaults (this could be a phone number that is forwarded to the above campus resources on a designated phone line).
    • Additional suggestions for the website should be sent to Mike Nielsen who will work on a re-design of the website and present it at the next SAC meeting.
  • Since the representative from Women Against Abuse was unable to attend today’s meeting, policy and procedures review was tabled.
  • Agenda items for the March 25th SAC meeting include the following:
    • Status of the Former Tea House (location and functions) (agenda item initiated by Pat Terranova),
    • The condition of the internal roadway leading from center to south campuses (agenda item initiated by Pat Terranova),
    • Implication for the University’s “Turnitin.com” requirement for students’ intellectual property rights (discussion initiated by Crystal Faries).
