Guests- Racquel Jones

  • Web site Development
    • Racquel Jones was introduced to the Explore U team. Racquel will work with Mike Nielsen as a temporary Information Management Assistant assigned to the Explore U project. Specifically, she will be charged with developing the electronic interactive checklist with which students will keep track of their career development activities that correspond with each stage of the Explore U model.
    • The committee stressed that the electronic checklist needs to be creative, interactive and dynamic.
    • The electronic checklist should contribute to motivating students to engage in the stages of the model and completing the career development tasks inherent in each stage.
    • It was suggested that the Explore U team put together a focus group of students to get feedback about how the checklist could be set up to appeal to students to increase the probability that students will use it. Team members will make suggestions of students to invite to serve in this capacity.
  • Sophomore Pilot
    • An email has been drafted that will be sent to the Explore U sophomores instructing them to go to the Career Services Center to pick up their Explore U gift and to re-introduce them to the Explore U model.
    • A list of all the sophomores in the pilot was distributed to all the Explore U team members so that everyone would be familiar with which students are in the pilot. In this way, anyone who has interactions with these students can encourage them to re-engage with the model (the first step would be to go to the CSC).
      • It was noted that the list needed to be updated; Br. Ed Koronkiewicz volunteered to do this.
      • The updated list will include students’ current majors and student ID numbers.
    • The Assistant Deans will follow the CSC email with an additional email reinforcing the initial message in the CSC email. In addition, the Assistant Deans will inform the Academic Department Directors as to which sophomores are in the pilot so that these students’ advisors can also communicate this message to them.
    • A draft of the email that will be sent to the sophomores was distributed and reviewed by the team.
  • Assessment Strategies
    • The committee discussed assessment strategies for the sophomore pilot.
      • The number of Explore U sophomores who come to the Career Services Center will be recorded.
      • It was suggested that the electronic checklist have a counter so the number of hits on the sophomore checklist can be recorded.
      • A “monkey survey” can be set up to be sent to all the participating sophomores to collect more qualitative feedback about the sophomore stage of the model.
      • Other objective measures such as retention rates and declaring and/or changing majors can be compared.
  • Explore U model – 5th stage
    • The committee was asked to start thinking about what tasks should be included in this stage.
    • This will be further discussed at the next meeting.
  • Upcoming Fall Semester meeting dates for the full Explore U team: October 16th, November 13th, December 11th.

Respectfully submitted by Lane B. Neubauer Ph.D.
