In lieu of our regularly scheduled meeting, we participated in the Diversity Forum scheduled for the same time period by our Students’ Government Association, as one of the montly Student Awareness Forums the association has initiated. Panelists included student leaders from multicultural, international, advocacy, and Greek letter organizations, as well as staff members from DSA units. Lively discussion covered topics ranging from descriptions of and statistics regarding acts of intolerance in our University community, possible underlying issues, and current and potential strategies for continued improvement.
We expressed our unanimous support, via e-mail, for the DSA initiative, upon recommendations from the Community Development Advisory Board and the Health Advisory Committee, to eliminate smoking from student residences, which we briefly discussed at our January meeting. (The plan was approved on February 18 by the Provost and the President. In addition, the President’s Team acted affirmatively on the Health Advisory Committee’s recommendation that smoking be fully eliminated from all other University buildings. A formal announcement will be forthcoming. We are reviewing, for discussion at our March meeting, materials submitted by Dr. Chapman regarding the availability in our Campus Store of alcohol-related items and products he considers questionable, from his perspective as Coordinator of our Alcohol and Other Drug Program.
